3 Things I Look For When Hiring A Business Coach

When it comes to growing your business having a coach who has already walked that path before you is an invaluable investment.
Ok, I am one, so I’m slightly biased, but I also invested heavily in my education and that’s what helped us get to six figures in less than a year in business. It also helped us get to multi six in year two and now we are scaling to seven…. so listen up, because this is going to help you. I’m super picky when it comes to hiring a coach for our business. I’m sure you’ve heard your fair share of coaching horror stories. Like when people invest in coaching, it doesn’t work, and they think all types of coaching won’t work for them. Now we know that is not the case… there are many reasons why programs don’t work. But I’m here to share with you what has worked for us. When hiring a coach for our business, these are the three things I look for: Credentials – do they have the skills required to get me to my end goal? Are they qualified and have the necessary experience? For me, it’s important to know that my coach is qualified and has the experience needed to help me reach my goals. I want to make sure that they are credible and have a track record of success. Another part of this is the way that they found success. Is it in alignment with what I want to do? If they made their money in a way that doesn’t resonate it’s going to be hard to find alignment and that is not a good start to any relationship. Commitment. How committed to my success are they? Will they be there for me when I need them? Do they have my best interests at heart? I need to know that my coach is committed to helping me succeed. I want to feel like they are invested in my success and will answer my questions when I need them. Imagine having to wait for days on end to get an answer for something that is pressing, or worse, they answer but they didn’t address the question properly because they were in a hurry. This is someone who I will be working closely with and I need to trust them implicitly. If they’re not as committed as me, it’s going to be a problem.   Character – what is their character like? Are they are good person? What will they be like to work with? An easy way to see how they treat others is to observe how they respond to comments and questions on social media. This is always telling. Do they post and ghost? Or do they take time to respond to people in a thoughtful and timely manner?  I want to know that the coach I am working with is a good person and that they are kind, supportive, and patient. These are important qualities because we will be spending a lot of time together and I need to feel comfortable with them. If they don’t uphold the same values there’s going to be a mismatch and over time it will end up being a big thing. These are the three things that I look for when hiring a coach for our business. Credentials, commitment, and character. If they can meet these criteria, then I know I am on the right track to finding a good fit for our needs.
